• Is 1h40m too tight of a layover connection at SFO airport?

Posted by Garret on October 27, 2023 at 1:11 pm

Any experience with tight layovers at SFO?

Looking to fly FLL-SYD and the only option some days (United) is with 1h40m in SFO.

I don’t want to get stuck in SFO for 24 hours.

How risky a connection is this? (Before anyone asks, flying out of MIA doesn’t help.

That SFO flight leaves an even tighter connection )

Perhaps scant comfort, but SFO is one of the better airports to be stuck in. Amex lounge, priority pass restaurants, etc.

There’s an airside walkway between United’s domestic terminal (T3) and the International Terminal (G gates) where most (all?) United flights depart. You won’t have to go through security again. I’d say 25 minutes gate-to-gate, tops. The risk isn’t the connection at SFO – it’s getting out of FLL on time. Use a card with trip delay insurance to cover that scenario.

If it’s all ticketed on one booking, United must believe it’s possible. Flew out of SFO last week to Perth, via Singapore, and would have to say it was pretty seamless.

If you’re American and don’t have to clear C&I then it’s likely fine.

United Domestic flies into Terminal 3 (concourse F). The international terminal is next door and contains concourses G and A. Concourses F and G are actually connected airside so if you’re going between those two it’s dead simple. If you’re United the whole way it will quite likely be G- that’s where the Polaris Lounge is.

If you are leaving out of A you will have to leave security and go through again at that concourse.

Should be plenty of time. UA boards about 40-50 min from departure. You’ll just need to go from domestic T3 to international terminal. Most likely won’t have time for Polaris Lounge in SFO

As long as it is the same ticket, and you don’t need to clear security again, you should be fine.
