No, it is definitely not safe to drink the water in India!
I brushed my teeth with it and didn’t get sick, but I wouldn’t drink it.
Also watch out at restaurants when they bring you tap water or anything with ice.
They sell bottled water everywhere but the best thing I did was buy a Grayl water purifier filter bottle.

It uses a carbon filter and filters out everything.
No chemicals or electricity needed.
You can even fill it straight from a stream if you want.
I have used it in India, Thailand, Bali, Hong Kong, and just filled it up straight from the tap and never had an issue getting sick.
