• What’s Best Site To Buy High Speed Train Tickets For Spain?

Posted by Wilhelm on February 2, 2023 at 11:09 am

I am going to Spain in April.

Where is the best site to purchase the high-speed train tickets?

Should I buy them in the US or buy them when I arrive?

Is it cheaper to buy them earlier?

You can book high-speed train tickets for Spain online on the Renfe.com website.

Try not to get your tickets on third party sites, as Renfe won’t favor them if there is a change, delay or cancellation.

Renfe will at least work with you.

We missed a train in Spain two times costing our family 1k dollars.

Arrive early, they scan your bags like at an airport.

OUIGO.com is another option (French site)

I had a good experience with Iryo when traveling from Madrid to Barcelona.

Seemed worth the small extra fee for their upgraded cabins

I always use the Renfe website to buy directly.

It’s a bit glitchy and can be somewhat unfriendly, but I always buy directly from the companies and avoid 3rd parties as much as possible.

Also, consider the price of a high-speed train may be the same as a flight.

We went down from Madrid to Granada, and then onto Sevilla on train.

But from Sevilla to Madrid, we bought a flight because it was about the same price as the train coming back, but faster.

This was 7 to 10 days in advance in June 2022.

Seat61.com is the best place to learn all about trains.

I used TheTrainLine.com to compare schedules and prices and then booked directly with the specific companies.

Renfe is the main rail operator but don’t forget to check the prices on the low-cost train routes as well (OUIGO, Iryo) on the main Seville-Barcelona route.

When I went in May, Iryo was new so they beat Renfe out on prices for any Madrid-Seville, and Madrid-Barcelona routes.

Ended up doing 1st class in Iryo pretty cheap which came with a meal that saved me hunting down food at my destination.

Also, the Renfe website is notoriously bad using it with US credit cards but just keep trying with different browsers/tabs and eventually, you’ll get something to go through.
