• Best Tips To Avoid Getting Sick When Traveling?

How do you avoid getting sick when traveling?

We just got off a cruise yesterday and by the second to last day my husband was bedridden with a fever.

I also had awful food poisoning the whole last night on board.

    Any tips or tricks?

I take raw garlic with food, vitamin C daily, mask even in public anywhere, use back of the hand to touch face if must, and clothes to open doors or towel, napkin, anywhere including room, or do above.

Will take a water filter travel tube if going to Mexico, Asia, etc.

Travel probiotics can also be useful.

Assume no one else has clean hands, because they mostly don’t.

As rare to wash medical safety grade, so your dishes, and utensils beware.

Cruise ships are notorious for stomach bugs such as Norovirus.

Frequent handwashing and use of hand sanitizer.

Especially after touching handrails on stairs, door handles/knobs, elevator buttons, handrails on deck, etc.

Try not to touch your mouth, eyes, or nose until you’ve washed/sanitized your hands.

Essentially, anything someone else could have touched before you is a reason to wash up.

I usually start taking immune-boosting vitamins about a week out from my trip and all the way through my trip and sometimes even a few days after if I have some left.

This year I’ve been really into Nuun tablets cuz they help with hydration and immune support.

Luckily haven’t gotten sick yet and have been to several countries on multiple continents this year.

These last few months as I’ve been to colder places I’m also masking up where it’s crowded to be safe. This has helped with not catching the colds and cases of flu going around this time of year

Food poisoning is harder to prevent.

I always travel with Pepto Bismol cuz I have a weak stomach but that really won’t help that much if it’s food poisoning

I always take a daily probiotics.

Also a multivitamin/immunity supplement (we like Nuun).

Also Purell hand sanitizer before eating anything.

We avoid western/tourist restaurants and eat at small family-run places, or ideally street food.

Wherever the locals are lined up!

I have become one of those N95 mask people in the airport and on the plane.

Yes, I know the air gets filtered, but when people so close are coughing and sneezing, I’m pretty sure the ick gets to you before the filters.

So far, knock wood, it has broken my pattern of coming home sick from every trip.

    Sorry to hear that!

Unfortunately, it can happen to anyone.

I’ve had a lot of success (knock on wood) by staying hydrated, limiting alcohol, drinking LMNT packets, and taking all my vitamins (especially vitamin C).

In countries with unreliable water, we avoid salads and fruits/vegetables without a peel (ex. bananas are fine, strawberries are a no) and we only drink bottled water or filter through out Grayl water filter bottle.

We’ve also taken Travelan with every meal on those trips and always carry Immodium and all sorts of other meds in a bag so we can treat anything as it comes up no matter where we are.

At the end of the day some things are unavoidable – we caught covid from our Alaska cruise last year.

Next time I will wear a N95 covid mask.
