• What’s Best Way To Get From JFK To Newark EWR?

Posted by Kasandra on October 24, 2023 at 7:14 am

What’s the best way to get between JFK airport and Newark airport in New York City?

My flight lands at 10:15 pm on 12/2/23 and my family of 4 has a train to catch at Penn Station at 8 am on 12/3/23 (right next to our hotel for the night).

We shouldn’t have more than a carry-on bag and backpack each, but public transport seems like it will take forever so not sure we want to take it that late at night (plus we’re not sure safety-wise if that’s a good idea).

Currently have a one-day freely cancellable rental car from JFK to EWR for $92 because that was far cheaper than any taxi/shuttle service/Uber/Lyft I could find.

I will drop everyone off at the hotel after the hour or so drive, then take the car to EWR and catch the free shuttle back to the hotel.

    Appreciate any advice!

Given how many legs the public transit route would require, I’d go for an Uber.

I did the subway/LIRR/airtrain from the Upper East Side to JFK in June and still paid $16.50 (and took a good 75 minutes) – with four of you, doesn’t sound like much savings for all the hassle.

For reference, my Uber back (at 10pm) was $91, including tip and tolls.

Rental car doesn’t sound worth it to me either.

A rental car will add up once you account for the tolls and filling the car back up with gas.

Also, the Belt Parkway could make that trip hours long even at 11pm.

Could always take the AirTrain to Jamaica, then LIRR to Penn Station NY, and then NJ Transit to Penn Station Newark.

A simple option would be to see if you could change the train to depart from Penn Station NY.

Can also see if the airline would let you change to EWR too.

I recommend using Google Maps and it will tell you all the public transport recommendations.

You can even set it to see future public transit schedules for the date you are traveling.

There might be a private bus service between the 2 airports.

But given you have a family of 4, more than likely it is cheaper to Uber.

That sounds like a lot of hassle to save a few bucks.

Between getting the rental car, navigation, tolls, dropping off, returning the car, and then shuttling to the hotel at that hour… no thank you.

Just hop in an Uber and pay the additional money

At that time of night, it seems worth it to spend the money on a taxi or Uber/Lyft and get to the hotel directly.

To get the rental car you might have to get on a shuttle, which will add time.

From JFK take the Air Train to Train Terminal – Jamaica / then take the train to Penn Station.

Only takes around 30 mins and is fairly easy.

You need to buy a ticket at the end of the air train to get into the station, then either download the LIRR app to buy tickets into Penn Station or you can buy from the ticket booth.

It’s really easy and I find it quicker and cheaper than a cab or Uber.

Is it a mainline train from Newark Penn Station, or some local NJ Transit thing?

Are you sure you want to stay in downtown Newark rather than Manhattan and getting the train there?

Depending on the age of your kids and how rested everyone will be, I would definitely pay at least 50% over the rental plan to just have a car waiting for me.

That’s a long, nasty late-night trip on a Saturday night.
