There have been plenty of times when I’ve needed my bags en route (I’m not taking hidden city ticketing, just legit instances).

I’ve had no problem checking just to my next destination when I’ve got an overnight layover for instance.

I can’t say for sure that they’ll let you do it, but it’s not impossible.

I’ve done it often for legitimate reasons and never had an issue.

If the connection is overnight the airline must give you your luggage.

You may need it for personal items or if you have valuables and don’t trust that the airline will take care of it or be responsible if something gets stolen.

Personally, even if I was not doing hidden city I wouldn’t trust my luggage to any airline at an airport overnight.

If you were flying into the US, you have to collect your bags at the first airport, so you would be fine.

Not sure how it works in Korea.

I tried doing this with KLM and they wouldn’t let me short-check it (when I was doing hidden city from ORD-AMS-BCN) but the layover was quite short.

In the end, I couldn’t fly on the ticket because they were forcing me to check the bag all the way.

It’s called short-checking and is quite normal for very long layovers.
