• Can I Upgrade My Flight Companions As AA Platinum?

Posted by Bill on May 10, 2023 at 12:27 pm

My daughter has outgrown lap status so the time has come that I start figuring out how to best book travel as a family of 3.

I’m looking to book an Alaska Airlines flight but want to make sure I’m best leveraging my AA Platinum upgrade benefits.

Do I book the 3 main cabin tickets together and then hopefully be able to use the complimentary upgrade to Premium Class on 2 of the tickets?

Then pay to upgrade the 3rd ticket?

Will I be able to request First Class upgrade on 1 or 2 of the tickets?

Should I book my wife’s ticket separately and then have just my child as a companion on my reservation?

Any guidance on how to do this best would be much appreciated!

I am not an AA traveler but United and I always make 2 reservations (one adult one child, and one adult separately.)

Then I link them on the phone just in case the flight is canceled or delayed.

We usually get all three upgraded but sometimes when it’s busy they have offered an exit row in which case only one adult can sit there.

If I see there aren’t many seats open I usually pay to upgrade rather than wait.

    Several things:

    – You obviously need an adult to stay with the small child no matter what.

    – Alaska not only doesn’t split PNRs unless asked, but if there is only one seat available you + your companion will be skipped by people lower than you on the status list for upgrades who are singletons.

    – Not all fares are eligible for instant upgrade.

    Check below:

All told your strategy is either:

Buy a more expensive fare to get 2 of you into Premium and upgrade the third, or probably waitlist 1 parent and child for Premium and First, and whoever “wins” the upgrade gets to care for the child.

    Best of luck!
