Can I Downgrade From Capital One Venture X To Venture?
I just tried to product change from Venture X to Venture since I don’t like using Capital One Travel Portal for the $300 travel credit.
They said no dice!
All they would offer is a product change to Venture One.
Has anyone else had this happen?
I could apply for Venture separately but I don’t want to lose a 5/24 slot.

Yep, downgraded to the Venture One in March (only option).
After a few months the option to upgrade to the regular Venture or Venture X showed up in my account.

Just downgrade to the Venture One then.
Chances are good that you’ll be able to upgrade that to a Venture in the future.

The Venture One preserves your points for no fee and still gives you the ability to apply for the Venture and get the SUB (although I don’t exactly know how Capital One “enforces” their rules on this).
I am in the “likely to downgrade” boat like you after Capital One changed the rules and you can no longer easily cancel a BS hotel reservation and take the cash.
