If I Book Award Flight On Points, Will I Still Earn Miles?

Posted by Willis on January 27, 2024 at 11:11 pm

I recently made my first award booking the GOL Airline Smiles frequent flyer program from Brazil and Argentina.

I had GOL miles and used the program’s partners to book AA flights in the US.

I was wondering will this AA award flight earn AA miles?

If yes, how do I claim those AA miles?

Would it be in my Smiles account or do I need to make a new AA account?

Thanks in advance from a newbie!

Nope, no miles for award tickets and no elite qualifying miles.

Even some regular revenue tickets like Basic Economy don’t earn miles anymore.

Almost all programs now award miles based on how much you paid.

I just flew on BA from BER-LHR-ORD roundtrip for $400 and earned JUST 400 miles for a flight that was almost 4,500 miles flown roundtrip.

No award flights don’t earn miles, unfortunately.

You also can’t earn frequent flyer miles if you don’t fly, meaning you can’t buy a ticket for someone and put your frequent flyer number in, and someone else actually flies.
