• Do You Earn Airline Miles For Award Tickets?

Posted by Magdalen on March 9, 2024 at 6:06 pm

I have a question regarding earning airline miles.

If I purchase flights using miles, do I still accrue airline miles for the trip?

I’ve been curious about this aspect of loyalty programs and would appreciate some clarification.

I know some hotels will count award stays as part of elite qualifying nights, so wondering if airlines do the same.

    It depends.

I purchased through the Chase portal using points and received Delta points.

Delta did not recognize it as a purchase made with points.

Chase presented it as a cash transaction, allowing me to receive the points.

    Generally not.

If you redeem airline miles directly from the airline, you won’t earn any additional miles.

For example, if you used United miles to purchase a United award ticket, then NO you don’t earn any more miles on that ticket.

If you use credit card points like Chase or Capital One and purchase an award ticket via their travel portal, then you should earn miles for those tickets.

If you transferred your Chase or Capital One points to the airline and then redeemed the miles for an award ticket, you wouldn’t get any additional miles.
