The bottom line for almost everyone is that this should be a moot point for most people as you should always have travel insurance for overseas travel these days for medical, quarantine, etc…

No, the Explorer Card does have some travel protections just not as good as Chase Sapphire Reserve.

If you pay for something dealing with the trip with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, then you get travel protection, so you can pay for almost anything like a hotel reservation or the like.

I specifically asked Chase about this pre-covid, but you can call them and confirm.

However, personally I would not depend on credit card travel insurance.

    Go for actual travel insurance.

Consider it a cost of doing (travel) business.

The travel protections on the Explorer card are the same as Chase Sapphire Preferred.

You’re giving up a little bit compared to Chase Sapphire Reserve, but not much.
