• What’s Best 3 Day Itinerary For Milan, Italy?

Posted by Linnie on December 3, 2023 at 12:45 pm

Looking for help planning a Milan 3 day itinerary.

My husband and I will travel to Milan, Italy in May 2024.

We have three days there to explore, and then will be flying to Barcelona next.

Can anyone recommend where to go during those three days in Milan that won’t require more than 3 hours of transportation?

Was originally thinking of going to Lake Como for a day trip, then going somewhere else for two days.

That somewhere else could be Florence, but also open to other destinations within 2 hours of Milan.

    Any suggestions?

We booked this flight flying from LAX to Milan using Iberia Avios, round trip: 100k + $300 in taxes.

I booked a year in advance.

Milan is amazing! Great food, art and shopping.

Highly recommend buying tickets to see The Last Supper now.

We were there earlier this year and had to get our concierge to get us the last 2 tickets available because they sell out months in advance.

It was an incredible experience that isn’t a last-minute booking.

We also went to Teremilano for the most amazing spa experience ever.

My suppliers took us to Lake Maggiore for the day and it was beautiful.

I highly recommend as an alternative to Como.

We just returned from Lake Como area and I wouldn’t go to Como (didn’t like it).

Take the train to Varenna, spend part of the day there’s then ferry to Bellagio for the rest of the day.

Bellagio was so gorgeous and a great walking tour there.

    Look into it.

I am dying to go back.

The Last Supper and get tickets to the top of The Duomo.

The views and architecture is spectacular.

Don’t wait on the tickets to The Last Supper, however.

Only 15 people every hour are admitted.

It’s a tough one to get last minute, but spectacular in person, as the group is small and the room is large

Go to Last Supper, La Scala and the Duomo.

Can do all in one day.

Then a day trip to Como – take the ferry to a couple of spots

Like others have said, you could easily spend the time in Milan.

    I’ve been there 2x and I think it’s underrated.

In addition to the Last Supper, the Duomo, and La Scala, Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) is interesting.

I second the Starbucks (if only to see it – it is pretty impressive and in a beautiful building), and you should make sure to try Milanese risotto and aperitivo one evening (happy hour with free snacks – a big part of Milanese culture).

If you really want to get out of town, I agree with someone else’s comment that the town of Como is not great, but there’s a town up on the hill above Como that’s pretty called Brunate.

Take a funicular up for a stroll around – and the ferry to Bellagio and Varenna from Como is easy.

In my opinion, Varenna is smaller but prettier.

I did a Viator trip that left from Arco del Pace, and brought me through Lugano, Switzerland to Menaggio.

Ferry across Lake Como to Varenna, and then another ferry down to Como, and the bus brings you back to Milan.

    Well worth it.

Agree with others though – if you haven’t been to Milan before, there’s plenty to do and transportation there is very easy and inexpensive.

But if you feel the need to explore, a couple quick half day trips that will still get you back downtown for aperitivo.

Go see the racetrack Monza, or the train to Parma is just over an hour and you can sit and eat prosciutto and parmigiano reggiano right in the middle of the piazza
