Last month a friend of mine flew with AI in J between MXP and DEL.

The seat was outdated but what was absolutely horrifying was that she got diarrhea and severe food poisoning.

She told me it must have been the curry she ordered.

It was so bad she could barely get any rest through the rest of the flight.

BOM-SFO is flown on ex-Delta planes so much better hard product with closed-door suites.

    Pretty comfortable in my opinion.

The food was average at best.

The flight attendants were kind but the service was a bit unorganized as per my experience.

They forgot/confused our orders a couple of times and used glasses weren’t collected for hours.

Not a big deal honestly but I’ve flown Qatar and Etihad the last few times so I’m probably making a biased comparison.

For the points price I paid, I still found it worth it.

While people like to dunk and hate on Air India, now that TATA has taken them back over, there has been marked improvement.

The hard product on the old 777 in J is below standard, but the soft product is improving.

They have a lot of new widebodies coming online in the next 18 month so the hard product will improve.

The reality is that I have found that the service, cleanliness, and food to be a whole lot better than the last two trans-Atlantic UA Polaris flights I have had.

I expect that with TATA’s investments, AI will soon be at par or better than our US carriers for international routes.

Check if the route is flying newer (eg: leased from Delta) planes or old ones.

I think on SFO-Mumbai they do fly the new ones.

I have always enjoyed their food and service (in economy), but the issue has been older planes.

The new ones should be good.

Honestly it depends on which planes they are using.

If they are using 777 or 787, those are pretty bad, even though they are lie flat. Can see review below.

Expect the service to be horrendous compared to US, EU, and Middle Eastern Carriers.

If the price is right and it is the newer planes, then I would fly Air India (only if there were no other better options)
