• Is SkipLagging Illegal?

Has anyone ever chosen to get off at a layover city instead of the final destination?

I have heard this is called skiplagging and want to know if skiplagging is illegal.

For reference, my husband and I booked a round-trip flight to Athens with a layover in Istanbul.

We wanted to spend a couple of days in Istanbul but couldn’t change the flight to a multi-city option.

Is it possible to get off at the layover stop without facing consequences, like having the return flight canceled?

We’re thinking of getting off in Istanbul and then booking a separate flight to Athens a few days later, so we’d still fly home from Athens.

What you’re describing is called ‘skiplagging,’ and it goes against the airline’s Terms & Conditions (the fine print stuff).

If you try it on a round-trip flight, they’ll probably cancel the rest of your itinerary.

People who do this often travel one-way with no checked bags, but frequent skiplaggers have been banned from airlines.

Since you booked a round trip, I strongly advise against trying this.

You can do this on one way tickets that have a stopover, since people miss their flights all the time.

If you do this on a roundtrip ticket, the airline will cancel your remaining flights.

I have done it many times before but if there is an issue like your flight gets changed and they reroute you, then you will be kind of screwed.

Also on skiplagged tickets, you typically can’t check bags.

I had one ticket ORD-AMS-BCN and I was going to get off in AMS, and KLM made me check my carry on or I couldn’t fly.

Skiplagging isn’t illegal though, meaning you can’t arrested for it, but the airline can get mad if you do it too much.
