You probably need at least one point to search.

This was the situation with Emirates (also using Avios).

Avios points are typically linked to British Airways and its partners in the OneWorld alliance, which includes Iberia.

So if you have any Capital One Points or AMEX Membership Rewards points, you can transfer them to BA, and then link them to Iberia.

If you don’t have any points, then you can find a great offer for British Airways card or Iberia card that might give you, for example, 85,000 sign-up points.

That is how I got started.

Both TAP Portugal (through Star Alliance partners like United and ANA, indirectly) and Iberia could be used in this combination.

    This is fine.

I generally find that two separate booking references work best anyway, even when flying the same airline in both directions.

By doing this, you can fly nonstop both ways.

Best advice is to use a free award search engine tool like PointsYeah.

Typically, booking with Iberia uses fewer Avios than booking with British Airways.

If you are flying economy, look for Blue Class on Iberia for additional savings.

Sign up for Avios For Thoughts, and you will get a bonus of 100 points when you verify your email.

That should give you some points to start with.

If you do not receive the sign-up bonus, just complete a survey.

I did this recently, and it worked perfectly.

I was able to get 44,000 points for a business class flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Madrid.
