Book a refundable ticket and then cancel it.

My understanding of the rule is you have one year from the day the original flight was booked, and travel must be booked by the expiration date.

Which to me also means you can book a flight for any time in the next year.

The clock is ticking on booking, not flying.

I would call Delta and be sure.

I had a Delta flight credit that expired at the end of last year.

    I simply called and asked.

They extended it to the end of March with no questions asked.

Sometimes, you just have to pick up the phone and ask.

I would call Delta and ask to have a credit extension, and try again with a different agent if the first one declines.
