• Is 40 Minute Layover Okay At Vancouver YVR?

Posted by Vernon on January 3, 2024 at 6:14 am

My wife is taking a flight from Brisbane -> Seattle via Vancouver (YVR).

The Vancouver layover was 2 hours, but the first leg got delayed by 1 hour 20 minutes, so now it’s only a 40-minute layover.

I don’t know what the Vancouver airport minimum connection time is?

I am wondering if would she need to go through passport control and security in Vancouver, even though she doesn’t plan to leave the airport.

What about collecting luggage, and going through customs?

If none of these, then 40 minutes sounds a lot.

She does have a Nexus, so if there’s passport control, it still might be fine but security can take too much time.

If she misses the connection, what is the recourse?

Would the airline put her on the next flight?

What happens to the baggage in such scenarios?

Does the airline (Air Canada) only put such passengers on their own flight, or other airlines too?

The next flight with them is 6 hours later.

There are Delta/Alaska flights in between but that’s not Star Alliance, so I wonder if they can still put.

    UPDATE:

Air Canada rebooked her on a Delta with 4 hr layover

40 minutes is probably pretty tight unless you want to run thru the airport.

I would recommend asking to be re-booked.

Vancouver has US customs preclearance so she has to go through, but usually very quick with NEXUS.

I had 20 min in Vancouver to make from SEA to Toronto flight.

I was messaging Air Canada as we were landing in Vancouver, they did have a later option for me.

It’s a few long hallways to run, I was short of breath but Nexus had no lines so I made it.

And I was not even last to board and I did not check in any luggage.

I just went through YVR on a SIN-NRT-YVR-SEA itinerary Friday.

YVR is preclearance so luggage will be checked through, she will get it in SEA.

Yes there is passport control but it’s to the U.S., you end up in the transborder part of the terminal as formally having entered the U.S.

They’ll take NEXUS and Global Entry.

Her connection is tight but I wouldn’t say you have no hope of her making the connection.

If she doesn’t it’s up to Air Canada to rebook.
