• What Do I Need For Minor Not Traveling With Parents?

Posted by Ariel on June 10, 2024 at 4:10 pm

My aunt and I are taking her 14-year-old granddaughter to London from US in August for Taylor Swift.

Since she’s a minor, do we need anything from her parents stating that they’re allowing her to travel with us?

I have heard horror stories about minors traveling internationally without their parents so just want to make it is possible before making non-refundable reservations.

When we traveled with our grandkids, we always took a form that allowed them to travel with us and receive medical care if necessary.

It included our names and passport numbers as well as the kids’ names and passport numbers and dates of birth.

    Both parents notarized it.

Ironically, we never had trouble taking them out of the country but we were always asked for the form and the kids were questioned on our return to the US.

It is always a good idea to have a travel letter.

I was asked for one 3 weeks ago in Canada while traveling with my son but without his dad/my husband.

I would also make sure you have a POA so you can make medical decisions if you need too.

Always good to have a notarized letter signed by both parents – one for travel and another for medical.

It’s best to have something in writing from the parents especially if you don’t share the same last name as the minor.

There are free travel consent forms you can download online that serve this purpose.

My brother uses this one when he travels with his minor son.

Also see Customs and Border Patrol guidance for children traveling to another without their parents.
