• What Happens To Someone’s Miles When They Die?

Posted by Constance on January 2, 2024 at 3:12 pm

If someone passes away and they have a lot of frequent flyer miles left in their account, what happens to them?

I know that transferring to another person typically costs money, but are there other ways to utilize those miles without losing them?

When my husband passed, I was able to have his airline miles transferred to my airline accounts by supplying a death certificate and filling out a form.

    Same with Hilton Honors points.

There are a few posts about this already about what you can do.

TPG has a good article on it.

The big lesson from a member last year who went through this is to wait to tell the credit card companies they have passed until you transfer the points somewhere.

They’re gone once you report the death from what I understand for the most part.

We just updated our wills and there is an “electronic usage clause” in there that allows our trustee to access all electronic accounts.

It also specifically states that any unused airline/credit card miles can be transferred to heirs.

I had never seen this before.

My wills were updated by a Military attorney because my husband is retired Navy.

When my mom passed I provided American Airlines a copy of her death certificate and my Power of Attorney and they deposited her points in my AA account.

    Very easy.

This happened to my stepmother when my father passed.

She was going to lose a ton of southwest points.

They told her to quickly buy gift cards with them and at least that way they got some value, so that is what she did.

She visited the gift card mall and gifted everyone with cards from my dad that Christmas cortesy of their gift card mall.
