On Friday my DTW-AMS flight was delayed 7 hours (sat on the tarmac for 3 hours) for mechanical reasons (discovered after boarding).

We finally left at 2 a.m.

I was also in Delta One and am Platinum.

Missed my ongoing flight to IST (only one every 24 hours).

Got a free hotel with an RT shuttle, free dinner and breakfast, $15 to spend at DTW during the delay, and €15 to spend at AMS.

I did not call at all, just took everything as it came because travel delays happen, and I got a notification that they had also deposited 25,000 miles in my account within 24 hours of the delayed flight.

So it sounds like you could get more, but maybe since you called before blanket miles compensation was given, that was all the CSR could give you at the time?

Not sure, but your delay experience/class flown/status sounds similar to mine.

Not necessarily through Delta, but what card did you book it with?

You may be able to go through Chase / Amex / Capital One and get reimbursement for any food / hotels you incurred during the delay.

If you had to book a hotel near JFK due to the delay, you could ask for compensation for that and any food expenses (really they should have already offered that at the airport) but otherwise, I personally wouldn’t ask for additional compensation for this.

There is no obligated compensation here, just whatever goodwill gesture Delta wants to make.

    EU261 does not apply.

You should be filing for EU261 compensation for each passenger with the operating airline.

You’re both eligible for €600 each based on the flight distance and delay reason.

This applies to flights with an EU destination that originates outside the EU.

While 7 hours is a substantial delay if the airline did not change your class of service, mqm/mqd earnings, or otherwise disenfranchise you then there isn’t much more to ask.

Of course, you can always get more points, but you made it to your destination on what appears to be the same day in Delta One.

You can always send in receipts for food if you incurred extra costs there.

It never hurts to ask for a few more miles.

In my experience, they often just grant that.
