I have an 18 hour layover in Shanghai, China coming up, starting very early in the morning, so we’ll have a full day to explore!
Any recommendations for what to do during an 18 hour layover in Shanghai, China?
This will be my first time in Shanghai, although I have been to China before, so I’m familiar with VPNs and necessary apps.

Taking the fast subway will quickly get you into Shanghai, China.
Do you have any ideas about where or what you might want to visit?
The Bund, located at the end of Nanjing Lu (a major pedestrian street), offers a fantastic view of the Pearl Tower and Pudong.
You might also consider visiting the Jade Buddha Temple, Jing’An Temple (further down Nanjing Lu), or exploring Yu Garden.
While Yu Garden can be crowded with tourists, it also features a beautiful garden where you can escape the crowds.
I haven’t visited Shanghai since 2017, but these are some of the highlights you might enjoy.

Make sure to set up Alipay, as Shanghai is mostly cashless and may not accept credit cards everywhere.
Immigration was surprisingly easy in Shanghai.
I found they spent more time examining my passport at Kennedy International Airport than at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Exploring Xintiandi is enjoyable, and of course, don’t miss the iconic Bund.
