What To Do On 23 Hour Layover In Paris, France?
Posted by Margaret Weller on January 2, 2024 at 4:58 pmIf you had a 23 hour layover in Paris (CDG) as a first time visitor (mostly likely in the Spring) where would you stay, and what would you do?
I’m a 62 year old mom who will be traveling with my 35 year old son.
Not especially interested in the typical tourist stuff but would like to get a taste of the local culture.
Please give me your best 1 day Paris itinerary.
Thanks!

I can personally recommend the Hotel Beloy Saint Germain in the Latin Quarter.
Walking distance to mass transit, Notre Dame, and lots of great restaurants.
Rooms are small but it’s a great spot.

We usually stay near Chatelet les Halles which is a major hub for the metro and RER (regional train) so you can get anywhere in the city as well as from/to CDG easily.
Lots of hotels and AirBnB in the area to choose from.
As for things to do in a non-touristy way you could consider booking an escorted food and wine tour.
Tours by Locals and Viator are good ways to book such a thing.
A 23 hour layover is a decent amount of time.
Since most flights from North America arrive in the morning, I assume you are as well.
Catch the RER into Paris, if you’re staying at a hotel then they will have baggage storage available if you’re too early for check-in.
Go wander the neighborhoods and have lunch, or take your tour, grab dinner a bit later than normal (maybe at a restaurant recommended by your tour guide from earlier).
Also try to book one of the string quartet/quintet concerts at Sainte Chappelle and have a late dinner afterward.

If you like art, the Musee D’Orsay is amazing.
I like it even better than the Louvre, which is kind of overwhelming.
Maybe a cruise along the Seine, and do some walking in the city.
Montmartre is nice as well as the Jewish quarter.
You can use public transportation and walk, maybe Uber to/from the airport.
See if you can find a hotel bookable on points with 2 beds.
Have a great trip!

I’d probably stay in Quartier Latin.
Easy transfer from the airport with RER B to Saint-Michel or to Luxembourg.
It’s close to a lot of things/places worth visiting, yet feels very Parisian should you just want to stroll around and take it easy.

I would take the RER into the city and have my luggage stored at the airport.
I would check out Champs Elysees since the RER has a stop there.

Here’s what you should do within 24 hours in Paris:
Stay in the 6ème near Rue du Bac.
Hop on bus 69 to Rue Cler, stroll the market street, and build a fantastic picnic for lunch, stopping at the fromagerie, produce markets, and trattorie.
Walk to the Champs de Mars and eat your picnic with a view of the Eiffel Tower, or stroll the few blocks to the Seine for a riverside picnic.
If you like art, spend the afternoon in Musée d’Orsay (don’t miss the impressionists), then walk back to the 6ème and have dinner at Cafe Varenne.
If you’re not completely jet lagged at this point, hop back on bus 69 going towards the Eiffel Tower and watch it sparkle on the hour every hour after dark, or just grab a drink at Les Ambassades on Rue du Bac and enjoy the Parisian people-watching.
Enjoy your stop in the best city on earth!
