Which Card Is Best? Chase Sapphire Reserve Or Venture X?
Posted by Mike on December 4, 2023 at 3:32 pmI am debating between getting the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the Capital One Venture X card and need some advice on which is better.
The Capital One Venture X card looks like it would be the better bet as it offers more miles when you sign up (75K vs 60K for the Chase Sapphire).
It also offers 2x miles on all purchases, unlike the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
We also travel to the UK a lot to visit family, and the Capital One Venture X looks like it provides access to lounges and Global Entry TSA pre-check (yes I know it’s a higher annual fee, but I think it would be worth it for this.)
Soooo… what am I missing?
The Capital One card really seems like the way to go, however, I read many blogs that recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred as the best bet, as do a number of my friends.

I think it comes down to personal benefit and how you think you’ll use the card.
For me Chase Sapphire Reserve gives me a lot of value just between the $300 travel credit, Lyft pink/citibike for NYC, and dash pass.
So that card pays for itself in my mind and I won’t cancel it for the foreseeable future.
I personally just got the VentureX almost exclusively for the sign-up bonus, which I just hit this week.
I’ll keep this card for a year then downgrade for sure.
I find that the Venture X provides little that I can’t get through my other cards.

It seems like you’re comparing between Venture X and Preferred?
I’d take a look at transfer partners and go from there.
Both have pretty tight personal card restrictions (2 personals on C1 and 5/24 on Chase).
I have both cards.
I applied for Venture X first and then CSP shortly after.
I like how straightforward the transfer partners are for Chase, but I use Capital One a lot more – 2X flat of everything and I use Turkish Airlines A LOT to fly between Hawaii and Texas (7,500 miles one way).
Award availability is hard to find to be honest, but pretty worth it.
To Europe, I think I’d choose to transfer to Virgin Atlantic – which both Chase and Capital One transfer to.

I chose the Venture X because my home airport has a Capital One lounge.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers non-lounge priority pass.
I’d take a look at what lounge options your home airport has.
The other huge factor for me is that C1 offers free authorized users priority pass.
I’m able to give my family access to an incredible lounge every time they travel, and that’s worth a lot to me.
Really hoping they don’t get rid of that perk.

I have both and very much like both.
But keep in mind Chase Sapphire Reserve also has Priority Pass but also restaurants and the super nice, but limited, Sapphire lounges.
$300 travel credit (for anything- even tolls and airport parking).
Which really makes it a $250 Annual Fee.
3x dining and travel (not in the portal), primary car rental insurance and trip delay of 6 hours.
Capital One Venture X – just booked an extra night in Key West using their $300 hotel credit via the portal.
They quoted $50 more than the hotel, so now I have that credit in the portal.
The 2x on all purchases is great and I prepay utilities, car insurance etc with it but the CSR is a really great card to start with.
They both give the same TSA / Global Entry credits.

Get both!
They are good for different things in my opinion.
These are my two staple travel cards that I won’t get rid of and use regularly.

I just opened CSR with a 70,000 point sign up bonus.
The fee is high at $550, but the benefits are excellent.
I got this one specifically because the travel insurance kicks in if you charge part of your trip to it.
Every other one I looked at you had to charge 100% of the travel to the card.
$300 annual travel credit, on any travel, not restricted to travel booked through their portal.
$100 credit towards Global Entry or Precheck.
Priority Pass Lounge Access
$75,000 rental car insurance that’s primary (does not cover a car your hit or medical)
$100 per day baggage delay coverage up to 5 days
Up to $3,000 lost baggage per person, per trip.
$100,000 Emergency Evacuation & Transportation (contact them to arrange transportation) They’ll also fly your remains home.
$500 trip delay coverage
Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance up to $10,000 per person, $20,000 per trip.
Emergency Medical & Dental coverage is weak at $2,500. Check the emergency provisions of your health insurance.
Extended Warranty coverage on purchases.
Adds 1 year to manufacturer’s warranty of 3 years or less. Max $10,000 per claim, $50,000 per account.

There is a difference between Capital One Venture and the Venture X some are discussing.
So just be careful as the X has more perks but a higher annual fee.
And in 2024 they’re changing some of the perks as well.
I don’t remember which ones but you can look it up.

A Chase Sapphire card pairs better with the next set of cards you would be applying for if you’re biz card eligible.
If you want lounge access you do the Chase Sapphire Reserve instead of the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
-
For me Capital One wins because I’m out of the country a lot and it gives 2x on everything, even abroad with no foreign fees.
-
To me, the Sapphire is a better card because it has much better transfer partners with Ultimate Rewards.
-
My thoughts will probably be unpopular.
I’m new to this but here’s my recent experience.
Got the Chase Sapphire Preferred…because you have to right?
Already had Capital One Spark.
Last week I finished booking our February trip to and from the east coast to Tahiti.
Didn’t use one Chase point.
Used my Capital One and Bank of America Alaska Card.
