• Which Airlines Offer Free Ticket Cancelation Or Refunds?

Posted by Garret on December 1, 2023 at 2:23 pm

I have a spring break trip coming up in March but the group plans are still kind of up in the air.

I really want to lock in the ticket prices but want to also be able to cancel last minute if my plans fall through.

Which airline in the USA are best about last minute cancellations or will give you a full flight refund for free?

I know many airlines have shifted to free ticket cancellations post covid, but not sure which airlines actually kept those cancellation policies.

I am open to airlines that have refundable tickets, as I don’t mind paying extra for that option.

If airline credit is okay, most US airlines will now give you credit if you cancel (as long as you aren’t in Basic Economy) up to the day of departure.

For AA, at least, you need to avoid Basic Economy, but regular Main Cabin and up qualify.

    Southwest has free cancelations.

Even the cheapest fares on Southwest can be canceled 10 minutes before departure and still get trip credit.

If you buy the more expensive fares, then you can get full cash refund for your flight.

Alaska Airlines is great on giving credit back to your wallet for future travel, even same day before flight.

BUT I don’t know if that applies to Saver fares…

To get a cash refund, you’re likely going to pay a lot more for that refundable ticket.

Many airlines, United & Delta for example, allow free cancellation to a credit, on many bookings, providing flexibility at far more affordable rates.

Just make sure you don’t book Basic Economy and you should be able to cancel or get a full refund.
