• Which VPN Would You Recommend For Use In China?

Posted by Isaac on June 8, 2024 at 7:42 am

I am going to China for a free stopover on the way to Thailand.

I have been before but I heard that you need a VPN when you visit China because all western apps in China are blocked otherwise.

Which VPN would you recommend for use in China?

    I have an iPhone btw.

Any other best practices to make sure I don’t get hacked in China?

ExpressVPN worked for me when we were there.

I also had a ‘Nomad’ eSIM which worked great in all provinces we visited.

    China is absolutely AMAZING!

May I suggest an esim instead?

I just returned home from China (my 4th trip!) and tried an esim this time.

    It worked great!

Never needed a VPN and had full access to all my apps 100% of the two weeks long trip.

Enjoy China, it’s an amazing country!!!! ❤️🫶✈️

I’m in China right now using ExpressVPN.

    Works great.

I travel to China annually and have used Surfshark for years without issue.

It should be noted that VPNs are illegal in China and there’s a new policy effective next month I think where they’ll be doing random searches on digital devices when entering customs/immigration.

I was there last week and Norton and Nord both failed (oddly Norton worked on my phone but not my laptop).

But got Astrill to work so I could access Google drive (all of our work and files are on google)

I had good luck with LetsVPN on China this past April.

I had Astrill VPN as a backup but it was SLOOOW.

Make sure you have a western cell phone plan or eSIM – what you use through these services are not blocked.

As an added backup (because I was working while in China), I used a Remote Desktop app to access my US computer to actually work.

The Wifi in the hotels was very slow, and using Remote Desktop while clunky was actually a better and faster experience.

    Hope that helps.

I use a Swedish VPN called Mullvad.

    $5 a month.
