• Are Luggage Straps Allowed On Checked Bags?

Posted by Edy on April 21, 2024 at 11:55 am

I typically use these Amazon luggage straps on my checked luggage to make it easier to spot on the baggage carousel.

But a few weeks back, when I was checking in two suitcases with luggage straps at Terminal 1 of JFK, the staff at the check-in counter told me to take them off, citing it as the airport’s policy.

However, they couldn’t give me a reason why.

Does anyone know why luggage straps are banned?

Is this an airport policy or are you not allowed to use luggage straps any more on any airline?

Luggage straps can sometimes slip off the bag and end up in the baggage handling belts.

This might not happen with yours specifically, but really inexpensive ones from certain countries can break very easily.

And when they do break, your bag could get stuck in the baggage system or even get damaged because the strap gets caught on something and doesn’t release from your bag.

This happened to me last November when I flew with Brussels Airlines.

They mentioned it’s a rule specific to the airport terminal.

I’m curious about what happens to bags on connecting flights because of this rule.

I use a strap for security since the buckles on my bicycle case aren’t TSA approved luggage locks and can easily come undone without being locked.

In the end, I had to resort to using plastic wrap around the case.
