I fly primarily Alaska Airlines.
They will deactivate after 2 years of inactivity but it can still be recativated.
Also, it’s easy to have some activity, a lot of plans enable you to earn miles for dining at certain restaurants when you use any credit cards that are registered to the dining program.

AMEX frequently offers generous bonus points if you register for “pay over time”.
Once you have the card you could call AMEX to see if such an offer is on your card.
If not, don’t agree to sign up for that. An offer will be coming your way eventually.
That said, there is no requirement for you to carry a balance to receive the bonus, so don’t do that.

As for the credit cards if you’re going to consider one go for the business version.
The sign up bonus and perks are the same but no 5/24 slot is used for it.
The personal card version had a $100 statement credit as part of the SUB which covered the annual fee for the first year but that offer ended.
