• Flying from Sydney, Is United Polaris Business Class or Qantas Business Class better?

Posted by Selena on November 1, 2023 at 3:34 pm

I’m planning a trip from Sydney back to the US and am lucky to have the opportunity to either fly business class United using Aeroplan or found an award flight for Qantas business on Alaska Airlines however I’m short a few miles and would cost an extra $450.

I’ve flown United Polaris before mainly to US-London and Hawaii so part of me wants to try something new as I’ve never flown Qantas before and am keen to try it.

Would like to get your thoughts on whether you would choose this additional expense for Qantas or just go with United since I have sufficient miles for those?

United is better than Qantas for the long haul. Plus, if you can transit through SFO it’s much smoother and easier than LAX on Qantas.

I fly between the US and Australia often (dual citizen) Qantas has been terrible post-COVID – they’ve cut back on amenities, and service is awful with overall experience and being on time. I flew MEL-SFO last week on United and it was so much better than any time on Qantas

If you’re short only a few hundred Alaska miles, can you just use their shopping portal to get some stuff instead of buying the additional miles?

In the past, I would have said Qantas. However it’s not the same airline it used to be. Go United.

I’ve not flown Polaris, but I flew Qantas Bus Class from LAX to Sydney and then back to Brisbane to LAX and had a great experience. Great service and food. Comfortable sleep with a mattress pad in addition to a comforter (I skipped the PJs). Food in LA lounge was a miss, though.
