Outside of the Avios airlines (British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus & Qantas) there isn’t inter-airline miles transfer for OneWorld alliance but you can use those points to book flights on American Airlines, assuming there is availability.

Once you move bank points to a travel partner those miles are to be used within that program.

So yes you’d need to book American Airlines flights via Qantas. Be sure to verify the award space before transferring.

No. You can’t move to American. Are you trying for a US to SYD/MEL award on Qantas? They price out much higher than via American. Cant say on British AIrways because I don’t know the current rates. Ideally book on American. But if no miles there you will have to do Qantas. Qantas really charges big for business or first awards. I know they are less on coach and Inter Australia. I flew them earlier this yr on an American award DFW-SYD business class. Later to Melbourne via Business.

If Qantas is a partner with American Airlines, and American still has tickets available to their partners, then you would book directly with Qantas.

Make sure flights on AA are available on Qantas, then transfer. You book on Qantas website, fly on AA metal.
