• If I book with miles, does Chase Credit Card Travel Insurance Cover Award Travel?

Chase Sapphire Reserve travel insurance question:

If I transfer Chase points to another airline and then use those points to book a trip, am I covered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel insurance?

I looked in the brochure and they define trip like this:
“any travel booked through a Travel Supplier for which:
    • any portion of the cost has been charged to the Cardholder’s
Account issued by JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. and/or its affiliates; or
    • any portion of the cost has been paid for with redeemable Rewards
that were accumulated by the Cardholder from a Rewards program
sponsored by JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. and/or its affiliates
    • while the insurance is in effect
    • and is for a time period that doesn’t exceed sixty (60) days in
duration; Note: If a Trip exceeds sixty (60) days in duration, You
will be reimbursed the pro–rated portion of any Non–Refundable
pre–paid Eligible Travel Expenses up to the first sixty (60) days of
    the Trip.”

I would pay the taxes on the CSR card, but the points would be transferred from Chase to another airline (as opposed to using the Chase travel portal).

I feel like paying the taxes would qualify as “”any portion of the cost,”” and the points are accumulated through Chase, so it should be covered.

But when I called the chase travel insurance the guy first said he did not know then he said no you must use the portal.

Does anyone have any direct experience with this?”

Paying the taxes with the CSR is what triggers the coverage. Once the points are transferred, they are no longer Chase points so I wouldn’t count on that part working

I’ll need to call them back tomorrow. I agree with everyone that paying the taxes / fees on the card should at a minimum trigger the coverage. I still think the points should count because the points were “accumulated from a rewards program sponsored by Chase,” but either way I would think paying taxes / fees with the card is enough.

You need to pay the taxes and fees for the trip with the card.

The legalese is pretty clear. They mean travel booked via the chase portal with points. If you transfer to an airline program you didn’t book the ticket with chase points. You booked it with the airline points/miles. That said, you’re still covered if you pay taxes/fees with the card.
